Been using Norton 360 which is now up for renewal and was thinking should i just download a free one.
Any advice as to which ones are as good or better than Norton would be appreciated. Thanks.
Some of the answers here are unbelievable but when i worked at a computer repair shop i did the following things.
1. GET RID OF NORTON: there is a norton removal tool online use that and get rid of it fully don't just uninstall because it leaves traces
2. Download spybot search and destroy and malwarebytes they are good virus scanners.
3. Scan you system and after that has fully completed install AVG free.
4. there are some steps inbetween but only really needed if your system is loaded with viruses.

No matter what free one you chose you will have to make sure you remove Norton using the proper tool supplied by symantec, otherwise it will cause all sorts of problems with your computer. You can use the tool here
As for the best free AV then there are lovers and haters of all the free AV's available. It really is a questionbest free antivirus software download on personal choice.
I prefer AVG personally and have never ever had an issue with any of my computers for 7 years.
Other people will say Avast and others will say microsoft essentials. It really is a matter of choice, but no matter which one you go for they are all better than NORTON
McAfee it's free with BT, but you also need a special tool designed to remove all Norton files before installing, it's no good trying to remove them manually,"per the book" so to speak as you won't remove all the files, the Norton Removal Tool is also free from the net.

A good choice would avast, but for me the best antivirus is Microsoft Security Essentials,
This av is Free and on youtube reviews detected all 10 viruses that were thrown to it.

Norton is notorious for slowing your PC down. Get kaspersky if you want to buy a new suite but as for a free choice i'd say you cant beat malwarebytes. its a free download with and with regular free updates it picks up things Norton never woulbest free antivirus software downloadd.

well it depends ..if you are a regular internet user i would recommend you to use avast internet security
and if not try using AVG 9.0
and if you are planning to buy an antiviruse then KASPERSKY INTERNET SECURITY 2010 is the best
I use AVG and it works great. I also use Zone Alarm too for a firewall.
AVG has had the most downloads but AVAST is also good.
Avast hands down. I started with the free version and liked it so much I purchased the new PRO. It has EVERYTHING. Firewall, Sandbox, Etc.
